Departmental Academic Advising
Group Advising Sessions
The Department of Anthropology holds group advising sessions once a semester.
These sessions are a great way to:
Learn about upcoming courses, employment and research opportunities, internships, and field schools
Meet the faculty and connect with individual advisors
Network with other students
Individual Advising
Students may also request one-on-one meetings with faculty in their area(s) of interest. These sessions provide personalized guidance on academic planning, subfield focus, and research or internship opportunities.
Course Requirements
Majors must complete:
Introductory courses in three subdisciplines of anthropology
A methods course
An integrative (cross-disciplinary applied theory) course
History and Theory of Anthropology
A capstone senior seminar
Students focusing on a particular subfield (e.g., historical archaeology, cognitive archaeology, applied cultural anthropology, medical anthropology, linguistics, biological anthropology) should choose electives in that subfield. Participating in a field school or community-based research course is strongly encouraged for hands-on experience.
Additional Opportunities
Students may also consider completing an honors thesis, senior seminar project, or internship in their subfield. Having research or public outreach experience prior to graduate school or entering the workforce can give students a strong advantage.
